UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week: Feb. 2, 2015

Shaquana Edwards – Weaver-Hartford girls basketball
The junior guard had her fourth triple-double of the season — 32 points, 17 steals and 10 rebounds, with seven assists — in an 85-27 rout of Hartford Public Thursday. Friday, she had 30 points and 13 rebounds as the Beavers beat Wethersfield 54-48 for their sixth win in a row.

Jeremiah Livingston – Westhill-Stamford boys basketball
The senior guard had 28 points and seven assists as the state No. 7 Vikings beat Norwalk 65-60 Wednesday to improve to 11-0 in the FCIAC. He followed up with a game-high 19 points in a 69-65 win over Trinity Catholic Friday to give Westhill (12-1 overall) the Stamford city title.

Zarvon Love – Crosby-Waterbury boys basketball
The senior forward-center had 24 points and 14 rebounds in an 85-70 win over Kennedy-Waterbury in a game seen on CPTV Sports. He followed up with a game-high 22 in a 93-44 rout of Woodland-Beacon Falls Friday.

Roy Kane Jr. – Norwalk boys basketball
The senior guard had 30 points, 20 in the second half, and 21 rebounds in an 80-65 win over Harding-Bridgeport Friday for the state No. 7 Bears. He had 23 points in Wednesday’s loss to Westhill.

Peter Masi – New Fairfield/Immaculate boys hockey
The junior defenseman had a hat trick in a 6-1 win over Joel Barlow-Redding 6-1 as NFI improved to 9-4.

Shea Tracy – Terryville boys basketball
The senior joined the 1,000-point club Thursday by scoring 51 points — including a state-record 13 three-pointers — as Terryville routed Shepaug Valley 86-52. The 51 points were two shy of the Berkshire League record set by Wamogo’s Chuck Aleksinas in 1977.

Crosby-Waterbury boys basketball improved to 9-2 thanks to some TLC from big man Zarvon Love. Westhill-Stamford put the FCIAC on notice with some help from Jeremiah Livingston (what else is new). UConn’s Kiah Stokes captures her second career triple-double as the Huskies dismantle East Carolina. The men are in action tonight. Sunday Feb. 1 3:30pm: A Frontline Encore:
League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis

On Super Bowl Sunday Feb. 1 at 3:30 p.m. — three hours before the Patriots meet the Seahawks in Arizona — CPTV Sports presents a replay of the October 2013 PBS Frontline documentary “League of Denial”, which chronicles the the NFL’s handling of concussions.

PBS has presented several other documentaries on this topic, including “The Smartest Team”, showing how one Oklahoma high school took on the issue.

The WIRE - LIVE Tonight From Amity, Huskies Fall in Cincinnati, Shaq & Shea Own Thursday

Hoop Night In CT comes to you LIVE from the greater-New Haven area tonight as Lauralton Hall-Milford girls basketball battles Amity Regional. The UConn men could not hit very many baskets and lost in Cincinnati, despite a great effort from Ryan Boatright. Shea Tracy (Terryville boys) and Shaq Edwards (Weaver-Hartford girls) make their case for player of the year nominations.

HS Boys Basketball: Crosby 85, Kennedy 70

Zarvon Love had 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead host Crosby High to an 85-70 victory over Waterbury rival Kennedy in an NVL boys basketball game Jan. 28. CPTV Sports was there and will show the broadcast premiere Saturday Jan. 31 at 7:00pm.

Sophomore Ty Sands had 16 points, Jordan Booker 15 and reserves Clevon Bristol and Jeremiah Kendall 14 apiece for Crosby (9-2). Kendall had seven rebounds, Bristol six.

Kennedy (8-4) was led by Darryl Flowers’ 23 point and 17 rebounds. Don Jarrett had 22 points and six rebounds for the Eagles.

HS Girls Basketball: New London 65, Ledyard 38

Charee Osborne had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead New London High to a 65-38 ECC girls basketball victory over visiting Ledyard Jan. 23. CPTV Sports was there and covered >the game LIVE.

The Whalers (12-2), No. 8 in the GameTimeCT.com state coaches/media poll, led 25-22 at halftime after Ledyard’s Francesca Matira hit a three at the buzzer while being fouled and completed the four-point play.

But New London outscored the Colonels 26-4 to pull away. India Pagan had 19 points and eight rebounds and Deanna McCarvell 11 points, five assists and three steals for the Whalers

Michelle Klinikowski had nine points, five rebounds and four blocks for Ledyard (7-6).

Bryan Acevedo, Masuk boys basketball

Bryan Acevedo, a senior guard on Masuk-Monroe’s boys basketball team, is our sixth UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week of the winter and 16th of the 2014-15 school year!

After starting 1-for-8 from the field, Bryan scored 32 points, 24 in in the second and third quarters, in Masuk’s 79-60 win over host Weston in an SWC boys basketball game Jan. 22. CPTV Sports was there and will show the broadcast premiere Tuesday Jan. 27 at 9:30 p.m.

Congrats to Bryan, who joins Greenwich boys basketball player Conor Harkins, Holy Cross-Waterbury girls basketball player RaShana Siders, Fairfield co-op boys hockey player Jake Fuss, Northwest Catholic boys hockey player Anthony Ceolin and Northwest boys basketball player Christian Thomas as our winter Student-Athletes of the week.

UChoose Student-Athlete of the Week: Jan. 26, 2015

Bryan Acevedo – Masuk-Monroe boys basketball
The senior guard and captain started Thursday’s SWC game at Weston 1-for-8 from the field, but led a 22-4 run at the end of the first half and finished with a game-high 34 points as the Panthers won 79-60. The game premieres on CPTV Sports Tuesday at 9:30pm.

Desiree Elmore – Capital Prep-Hartford girls basketball
Before a large Martin Luther King Day crowd at the University of Hartford’s Chase Family Arena, Desiree, a guard, scored a game-high 32 points with nine rebounds as then-No. 2 Prep routed No. 1 Mercy-Middletown 88-48. CPTVSports.org will have special profile of the much-anticipated showdown this week.

Mustapha Heron – Sacred Heart-Waterbury boys basketball
The junior guard - who has committed to the University of Pittsburgh - scored a game-high 46 points Friday, including 15 in the third quarter (three threes and five shots in a row, as reported by the Waterbury Republican-American’s Joe Palladino), as No. 1 Sacred Heart handed Naugatuck its second loss, 88-59.

Chris Jean-Pierre – Valley Regional-Deep River boys basketball
The senior forward, who helped lead Valley to a state football title in December, had a triple-double (13 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) in a 59-44 win over North Branford Friday.

Joe Tamburro – South Windsor boys basketball
The senior guard had 42 points, including the game-winning three-pointer in overtime (one of his six threes), to give South Windsor (6-4) a 72-71 win over East Hartford Thursday.

Eddie Volkerts – Fitch-Groton boys basketball
The junior forward had 21 points, 18 rebounds, five assists and five steals to lead Fitch (9-2) to a 66-51 win over Killingly.
